Seems pretty damn intuitive, though it is stunning to see how readily Americans have been to surrender their freedoms to "prevent the terrorists from winning." Yet, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a society so keen to bind itself through religion should be reluctant to relinquish rights to the government. Sad commentary on the state of the American mindset, I'm afraid....
You hit the nail right on the head-- religion has essentially set up the framework for citizens to trade in their freedom and rights for security.
